Read the New Testament in a Year: Week 48 - 2 John, 3 John, Jude, and Revelation 1-2

Week 48: Exploring 2 John, 3 John, Jude, and Revelation 1-2

In week 48 of our quest to read the New Testament in a year, we will explore the letters of 2 John, 3 John, and Jude, followed by the opening two chapters of Revelation. These readings bring both encouragement and caution for believers, urging us to live faithfully in truth and love while remaining vigilant against false teachings. John’s letters emphasize the importance of walking in obedience to God’s commands, extending hospitality, and supporting those who work for the truth. Jude’s letter warns against deception and encourages believers to strengthen their faith in preparation for Christ’s return. As we begin Revelation, we will read about John’s vision of the glorified Christ, who delivers messages to the seven churches. Through these chapters, we will be challenged to grow in love, faithfulness, and spiritual discernment, holding fast to the truth and staying prepared for the future Christ has promised.

2 John

2 John 1:5 (ESV): And now I ask you, dear lady—not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning—that we love one another.

The single chapter of 2 John encourages believers to remain in the truth and warns against those who deceive or deny Christ. John emphasizes the command to love one another and to walk in obedience to God’s commands. He urges caution against false teachings, reminding believers of the importance of holding firmly to their faith.

3 John

3 John 1:11 (ESV): Beloved, do not imitate evil but imitate good. Whoever does good is from God; whoever does evil has not seen God.

3 John focuses on showing hospitality and supporting those who work for the truth. John commends Gaius for his faithfulness in welcoming traveling believers, contrasting this with Diotrephes, who hinders others from showing hospitality. The chapter underscores the importance of doing good and supporting faithful ministry.

Jude

Jude 1:21-23 (ESV): Keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. And have mercy on those who doubt; save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.

In his letter, Jude warns believers about false teachers who distort the truth and lead others astray. He urges them to contend for the faith and reminds them of past judgments on those who rebelled. Jude encourages believers to build themselves up in faith, pray, and keep themselves in God’s love, waiting for Christ’s mercy and passing on that mercy to others.

Revelation 1

Revelation 1:8 (ESV): “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

In Revelation 1, John receives a vision of Jesus Christ, who appears in glory and power. Jesus instructs John to write letters to the seven churches. The chapter sets the tone for Revelation, highlighting Christ’s authority and eternal nature.

Revelation 2

Revelation 2:7 (ESV): He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.

In Revelation 2, Jesus addresses four of the seven churches: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, and Thyatira. He commends them for their strengths, but also calls out areas needing repentance and improvement. Each message is tailored to the church’s specific circumstances, offering both encouragement and warnings to remain faithful.
