Week 45: Exploring Hebrews 4-8
In week 45 of our journey to read the New Testament in a year, we will delve into Hebrews 4-8, exploring themes of faith, rest, and Jesus’ unparalleled role as our High Priest and mediator of a new covenant. This week’s passages challenge us to enter God’s promised rest through faithful obedience, draw close to the “throne of grace” for help in times of need, and press on toward spiritual maturity. As we read, we encounter the assurance of God’s promises, the deep comfort in Jesus’ continual intercession for us, and the hope offered by the new covenant, in which God’s laws are written on our hearts.
Through these chapters, we are invited to reflect on what it means to have access to God through Jesus, who has secured for us an eternal relationship with God. Together, let’s consider how we can embrace this access with confidence, find rest in His grace, and deepen our understanding of the faith that anchors our souls.
Hebrews 4
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Hebrews 4:16 (ESV)
Hebrews 4 speaks of God’s promised rest, available to those who believe and remain faithful. The chapter describes the importance of entering this rest through faith and obedience. It also highlights Jesus as our great High Priest, who sympathizes with our weaknesses, encouraging us to approach God’s throne with confidence.
Hebrews 5
In Hebrews 5, the author explains Jesus’ qualifications as our High Priest, who, like Melchizedek, was appointed by God. Although He was the Son of God, Jesus learned obedience through suffering, making Him the source of eternal salvation. The chapter urges readers to grow in spiritual maturity, moving beyond elementary teachings.
Hebrews 6
Hebrews 6 emphasizes the importance of moving toward maturity in faith and warns against falling away after receiving the truth. The chapter reassures believers of God’s promise, encouraging them to remain diligent and hopeful. It also describes the certainty of God’s oath and His unchanging nature as an anchor for the soul.
Hebrews 7
In Hebrews 7, the author discusses the priesthood of Melchizedek, showing how Jesus’ eternal priesthood surpasses the Levitical priesthood. Jesus is described as a perfect, sinless priest who continually intercedes for believers. His priesthood brings a better hope and covenant, securing eternal access to God.
Hebrews 8
In Hebrews 8, the author presents Jesus as the mediator of a new covenant, one superior to the old because it is based on better promises. The chapter highlights how the old covenant was flawed, as people could not fully keep its laws. God promises to write His laws on people’s hearts, offering a closer relationship with Him under the new covenant.
