In a world filled with shifting circumstances and constant noise, finding true rest for our souls can feel almost impossible. We often search for security in our finances, our relationships, or our own carefully laid plans, only to find that human efforts leave us feeling more anxious than before. This prayer is grounded in the comforting words of John 14:27 and reminds us that the peace Christ offers is fundamentally different from anything the world can provide. As we seek to follow Jesus each day, we can discover a deep sense of contentment and joy by surrendering our need for control. When we stop trying to manage our own lives and begin trusting in the Father’s perfect care, we find a quiet confidence that keeps our hearts from being troubled or afraid.
A Prayer
Dear Father,
You are the author of ultimate peace. I adore you for your perfect goodness, your complete sovereignty, and your unwavering care over every detail of my life. You hold the universe together by the word of your power, and yet you extend your gentle hand to quiet my restless spirit. I praise you for being a Father who does not abandon his children to their own weakness, but continually calls us back into the stillness of your presence.
I confess that I try to disrupt your peace by doing things my way. I am selfish, and I am bitter when things do not go according to my plans. I want my own way and will disobey you freely to get it, mistakenly believing that I know what is best for me. This is not what you intended for me. You placed Adam and Eve in a perfect garden and gave them a rule, but they allowed their hearts to be troubled by this rule and disaster ensued. The consequences of that choice led to more trouble and fear, and I confess that I make those same foolish choices every single day.
Fortunately, you reassure us that when we make the same mistakes that Adam and Eve made, we can still return to you and find your peace. Thank you for not leaving me to my own sinful devices, and thank you for the incredible gift of your word in John 14:27 (ESV): “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” Thank you for sending Jesus to secure a real, lasting peace that no earthly trial can ever wash away.
When we surrender our control to you, you promise to right everything in the end. There may be some terrifying things on the journey, but we do not need to be afraid that you will not right it. Help me to believe this promise! Fill my heart with a quiet joy that relies on your strength rather than my current circumstances. Help me learn to be your daughter and protect me the way that a loving father should. Guide my steps, calm my anxious thoughts, and teach me to rest completely in your unwavering love.
In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

- What area of your life are you currently trying to control instead of surrendering it to God?
- How is the peace that Jesus offers different from the temporary peace that the world tries to give?
- In what ways do you see yourself making mistakes similar to Adam and Eve when you demand your own way?
- What is one practical step you can take today to guard your heart against fear and anxiety?
- How does knowing that God will “right everything in the end” give you comfort in your current struggles?
