It is hard to live in peace with the people around us when we are constantly being hurt or let down by their actions. Our natural reaction is to protect ourselves, nurse our wounds, and wait for some kind of revenge instead of offering forgiveness. This prayer, based on the clear warning in Hebrews 12:14-15, deals with the quiet danger of letting a root of bitterness grow deep inside our hearts. As we try to follow Jesus, we will quickly learn that we cannot find true contentment and joy when we are holding onto hidden anger. By turning away from our grudges and choosing to look toward God’s peace and holiness, we will open the door for his grace to wash away our resentment and change how we treat others.
A Prayer

Dear Father,
You are the holy one who loves a sinful people without measure. I adore you for your incredible patience and your willingness to extend mercy to those who do not deserve it. You are gracious to people who have done nothing to earn your favor, and you continue to instruct us how to walk in your ways even as we actively fight against you. You lead us down the path of peace and towards your holiness, showing us a better way to live when our own wisdom fails us completely.
I confess that I often choose to ignore your teachings. I hang onto my hurts and demand that others get vengeance rather than grace, keeping a close count of every mistake made against me. I allow bitterness to spring up in me and cause trouble for both me and those around me, which ruins both my relationships and my peace of mind. I allow myself to be defiled by my anger, letting my stubborn pride get in the way of what is right. I am truly sorry for the times I have preferred my own grudges over your commands.
Thank you that you have enough grace to deal with anything I can throw at you. Your mercy is always larger than my failures, and you never grow too tired to correct my steps. You teach me how to walk in your ways, and you show me that the path of peace will lead to holiness. Thank you for the direct guidance found in your word in Hebrews 12:14-15 (ESV): “Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no ‘root of bitterness’ springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled.” Thank you that your grace can heal the damage that bitterness causes.
Please don’t give up on me! Continue to walk with me in every aspect of my life, even when I am stubborn and slow to follow your direction. Teach me to be holy, just as you are holy, and give me a heart that reflects your love and kindness. Help me to delight in showing grace to those who don’t deserve it, just as you have shown it to me. Grant me a lasting joy that comes from a clean heart, and keep me from bitterness and defilement so that I can find true contentment as I follow Jesus each day.
In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
Reflect
Consider the following reflection questions:
- Is there a specific hurt you are holding onto right now that might be turning into a root of bitterness?
- What does it look like for you to strive for peace with someone who has offended you?
- Why is it so easy to demand justice for other people but expect total grace for ourselves?
- In what ways have you noticed that your own anger or resentment causes trouble for the people around you?
- How can remembering the grace God has shown you give you the strength to forgive someone this week?
Respond
Please pray a prayer about striving for peace and holiness with everyone.
If you aren’t sure where to begin, you can use the ACTS prayer method: Adoration, Confession, Thankfulness, and Supplication:
- Adoration: Praise God. Does this verse bring any specific characteristics of God to mind?
- Confession: Tell God that you are sorry for specific sins. Does this verse bring any specific sins to mind?
- Thankfulness: Show gratitude towards God. Does anything from this verse inspire gratitude?
- Supplication: Make requests for yourself and for others. Does anything from this verse inspire a prayer?
If helpful, you can use a prayer journal template.
