Summary of the Passage

This passage tells the story of a man who was very sick. He had a bad skin disease that made him live apart from other people. In Bible times, people with these kinds of diseases were often called “unclean.” They could not live with others or go to the temple. Many people were afraid of them.

One day, this man saw Jesus. He was brave and went up to him. He got down on the ground and begged Jesus to heal him. He believed that Jesus could help him. Jesus did something very kind—he touched the man. Then he said he wanted to heal him. Right away, the man was healed. His disease was gone.

Jesus told the man not to talk about it. He told him to go to the priest, like the law of Moses said, and give a gift to show he was healed. But many people heard about what Jesus did. More and more people came to see him. They wanted to hear him and be healed too. Even with the big crowds, Jesus still took time to go away and pray to God.

This passage shows us that Jesus cares for people who are hurting. It teaches us that Jesus has power to heal, and he also made time to talk with God in prayer.

Most English learners should use the Easy-to-Read Version (ERV), the New International Reader’s Version (NIRV), or the Good News Translation (GNT). If you want to try something harder, you can read one of the other Bible versions.

Text from the ERV Bible Translation

Jesus Heals a Sick Man
12 One time Jesus was in a town where a very sick man lived.
This man was covered with leprosy. When the man saw Jesus, he bowed before Jesus and begged him,
“Lord, you have the power to heal me if you want.”
13 Jesus said,
“I want to heal you. Be healed!”
Then he touched the man, and immediately the leprosy disappeared.
14 Then Jesus said, “Don’t tell anyone about what happened.
But go and let the priest look at you.
And offer a gift to God for your healing as Moses commanded.
This will show people that you are healed.”
15 But the news about Jesus spread more and more.
Many people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses.
16 Jesus often went away to other places to be alone so that he could pray.

Luke 5:12-16 (ERV)
Text from the GNT Bible Translation

Jesus Heals a Man
12 Once Jesus was in a town where there was a man who was suffering from a dreaded skin disease. When he saw Jesus, he threw himself down and begged him, “Sir, if you want to, you can make me clean!”
13 Jesus reached out and touched him. “I do want to,” he answered. “Be clean!” At once the disease left the man.
14 Jesus ordered him, “Don’t tell anyone, but go straight to the priest and let him examine you; then to prove to everyone that you are cured, offer the sacrifice as Moses ordered.”
15 But the news about Jesus spread all the more widely, and crowds of people came to hear him and be healed from their diseases.
16 But he would go away to lonely places, where he prayed.

Luke 5:12-16 (GNT)
