This Bible study lesson is for people who are learning English (ELL or ESL students). It is made for advanced beginner and intermediate English learners. Children who speak English or adults who prefer easy English may also enjoy it and learn from it, although I also have a Sunday School lesson on Luke 5:1-11 and Luke 5:27-32 that may work better for native English speakers.

Summary of the Passage
This passage happens early in Jesus’ work on earth. Many people wanted to hear him teach about God, so they came to a lake called Lake Gennesaret. Jesus saw two boats on the shore. The fishermen were washing their nets after working all night. Jesus got into a boat that belonged to a man named Simon. Simon would later be called Peter. Jesus asked Simon to push the boat out a little, and Jesus sat in the boat and taught the people from the water.
When Jesus finished teaching, he told Simon to take the boat out into deep water and lower the nets again. Simon was tired because he and his friends had worked all night without catching any fish. But Simon listened to Jesus. When they put the nets down, they caught so many fish the nets almost broke! They needed help from their friends in another boat. Both boats were so full of fish that they almost sank.
Simon was amazed. He realized Jesus was very special and powerful. He told Jesus that he was a sinful man and felt afraid. But Jesus told him not to be afraid. Jesus said from now on, Simon would catch people instead of fish, meaning he would help bring people to God. Right away, Simon, James, and John left everything behind and followed Jesus.
This passage teaches us to listen to Jesus and trust him. It also shows us that Jesus calls ordinary people to do important work for God.

Text from the ERV Bible Translation
Jesus Chooses Some Followers
Luke 5:1-11 (ERV)
1 As Jesus stood beside Lake Galilee, a crowd of people pushed to get closer to him and to hear the teachings of God.
2 Jesus saw two boats at the shore of the lake.
The fishermen were washing their nets.
3 Jesus got into the boat that belonged to Simon.
He asked Simon to push off a little from the shore.
Then he sat down in the boat and taught the people on the shore.
4 When Jesus finished speaking, he said to Simon,
“Take the boat into the deep water.
If all of you will put your nets into the water, you will catch some fish.”
5 Simon answered,
“Master, we worked hard all night trying to catch fish and caught nothing.
But you say I should put the nets into the water, so I will.”
6 The fishermen put their nets into the water.
Their nets were filled with so many fish that they began to break.
7 They called to their friends in the other boat to come and help them.
The friends came, and both boats were filled so full of fish that they were almost sinking.
8-9 The fishermen were all amazed at the many fish they caught.
When Simon Peter saw this, he bowed down before Jesus and said,
“Go away from me, Lord. I am a sinful man!”
10 James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were amazed too.
(James and John worked together with Simon.)
Jesus said to Simon,
“Don’t be afraid.
From now on your work will be to bring in people, not fish!”
11 The men brought their boats to the shore.
They left everything and followed Jesus.
Text from the GNT Bible Translation
Jesus Calls the First Disciples
Luke 5:1-11 (GNT)
5 One day Jesus was standing on the shore of Lake Gennesaret while the people pushed their way up to him to listen to the word of God.
2 He saw two boats pulled up on the beach; the fishermen had left them and were washing the nets.
3 Jesus got into one of the boats—it belonged to Simon—and asked him to push off a little from the shore. Jesus sat in the boat and taught the crowd.
4 When he finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Push the boat out further to the deep water, and you and your partners let down your nets for a catch.”
5 “Master,” Simon answered, “we worked hard all night long and caught nothing. But if you say so, I will let down the nets.”
6 They let them down and caught such a large number of fish that the nets were about to break.
7 So they motioned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. They came and filled both boats so full of fish that the boats were about to sink.
8 When Simon Peter saw what had happened, he fell on his knees before Jesus and said, “Go away from me, Lord! I am a sinful man!”
9 He and the others with him were all amazed at the large number of fish they had caught.
10 The same was true of Simon’s partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee. Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.”
11 They pulled the boats up on the beach, left everything, and followed Jesus.
