In week 37 of our year-long Bible reading journey, we will explore the concluding chapters of Numbers (chapters 22-36), which contains captivating narratives such as Balaam’s story, instances of idolatry, the leadership transition to Joshua, and various aspects of community life. At the end of the week, we will read most of Book 4 of Psalms (Psalms 90-103), which will delve into themes of divine sovereignty, human mortality, and the enduring faithfulness of God. These passages will offer a rich tapestry of historical narratives and spiritual reflections, providing insights into the faith and experiences of the Israelites.

Numbers 23-36

In the Book of Numbers, chapters 22-24 will center around the fascinating story of Balaam, a prophet hired by Balak, the king of Moab, to curse the Israelites. Instead, Balaam is divinely compelled to bless them, highlighting the protection and favor God has bestowed upon the chosen people. Don’t miss the section about Balaam’s talking donkey!

In chapter 25, we will see a troubling episode of idolatry among the Israelites and the zealous intervention of Phinehas. In chapter 27, the daughters of Zelophehad will approach Moses with concerns about inheritance rights, leading to God instructing Moses to appoint Joshua, the son of Nun, as his successor. This appointment becomes a pivotal moment and will establish Joshua’s leadership role in leading the Israelites into the Promised Land after Moses.

Chapters 28-36 will delve into various aspects of community life, including a second census, inheritance laws, regulations concerning offerings, vows, and oaths, as well as guidelines for the distribution of land among the tribes. Chapter 32 will address the unique request of the tribes of Reuben and Gad to settle on the east side of the Jordan River, prompting Moses to establish conditions for their involvement in conquering the Promised Land. The concluding chapters will offer a summary of the Israelites’ wilderness journey, delineate the boundaries of the Promised Land, and address issues related to cities of refuge and inheritance rights, providing a comprehensive conclusion to the book of Numbers. In this final stretch, readers can anticipate a convergence of historical narratives, legal provisions, and divine guidance, ultimately preparing the Israelites for the pivotal transition into the long-awaited Promised Land.

Psalms 90-103

Book 4 of the Book of Psalms, encompassing Psalms 90 to 106, presents a diverse collection of expressions that delve into themes of divine sovereignty, human mortality, and the enduring faithfulness of God. We will read Psalms 90-103 this week, but will save Psalms 104-106 for next week. Attributed to Moses, Psalm 90 contemplates the eternal nature of God in contrast to the fleetingness of human life. Throughout this section, Psalms 91-100 emphasize the kingship of God and the refuge found in his protection. Psalm 95, a call to worship, serves as a poignant reminder of Israel’s historical disobedience. The collection further explores themes of righteousness, mercy, and creation in Psalms 101-104. The concluding Psalms 105-106 narrate the history of Israel, recounting both their failings and God’s steadfast faithfulness. Collectively, Book 4 engages with a wide spectrum of human experiences, offering prayers, praises, and reflections that continue to resonate with our spiritual journeys.
