A Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
I come before you with a heavy heart, deeply troubled by the prevalence of hateful reactions directed at both ethnic Israelis and Palestinians. It is perplexing to witness people’s outrage being channeled towards individuals simply due to their ancestral heritage. Lord, help me understand why these judgments are based on heritage rather than individual actions.
As I see news reports of recent events on American college campuses, confusion fills my heart. I am especially troubled by a recent incident on the Cornell campus, where one student threatened others because of race and religion. While this threat was directed at Jewish students, it is disheartening to witness so much hate and mistreatment that has been affecting Jewish, Palestinian, and Muslim individuals alike. Even more distressing is when these words and actions stem from those who claim to know you.
I am reminded of your encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well, a woman despised by many. She was a woman that by human logic, you should have hated, yet you offered her your understanding and the message of living water, and she was transformed. Lord, may we too understand that these acts of hate are not in line with your teachings of love and compassion.
In the face of this pervasive darkness, please grant me wisdom and compassion. As I meet people deeply connected to the Israel-Hamas conflict, help me understand the various perspectives involved. When I encounter individuals filled with hate, grant me the wisdom to speak from your love and compassion. Make your love known to all those unfairly judged based on their race or religion rather than their actions.
Above all, I pray for peace and reconciliation. The world needs reconciliation with you, but some are going about it in the wrong way, resorting to hate and violence instead of demonstrating your love.
Grant people the ability to forgive their deepest enemies, as you’ve shown through the examples of Corrie ten Boom, who forgave the Nazis, and Stephen, who forgave those who stoned him. Provide guidance to Christians interacting with people on both sides of this conflict.
I thank you for continually demonstrating that peace and reconciliation are possible. You gave your only Son, Jesus Christ, for our salvation. You provided Stephen with the strength to forgive his attackers, and Corrie ten Boom the ability to shake hands with one of her captors. Lord, please continue to bestow this peace upon all who carry unforgiving hearts. May it be a reality in their lives soon.
In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
