During week 15 of reading through the Bible in a year, we will read the entire book of Amos and start the Gospel According to Luke.
Amos: Prophetic Warnings of God’s Judgment
Amos was a minor prophet during a prosperous time. God called him to leave his village in Judah and head towards the more sinful northern kingdom of Israel. While there, Amos told them of God’s coming judgement, but since times were good, they mostly ignored him. Isn’t this familiar in our own lives! Sometimes we only remember to call out to God in our misfortune. If we are committing sins of negligence toward God, idolatry, greed, corruption, and oppression of the poor, we should read Amos’ warnings to the various nations. If we change our ways and repent, we can have hope that we will be part of Israel’s restoration described in the last 5 verses of the book!

Luke: The Birth and Early Ministry of Jesus
This hope of restoration begins with Jesus, so the book of Luke is a great next read! The birth of Jesus will begin this process, but will not be finished until his second coming. In the first 11 chapters, we will read the traditional Christmas story, hear what John the Baptist’s role was, learn about the calling of the first disciples, and gain insight into Jesus’ ministry, miracles, and teachings. If you have never read the Bible, this book is an excellent starting place!
