As we read through the Bible in a Year, week 9 brings us to the middle section of the book of Isaiah. Up through chapter 39, Isaiah is full of warnings and gloom, letting the Israelite know of God’s judgement against them. In chapter 39, he correctly predicts that the Israelites will be conquered by the Babylonians. Fortunately, Isaiah 40 marks a transition point, beginning with the words, “Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.” From here, Isaiah talks of God’s plan for restoration and predicts many of the coming events regarding both Babylon and Jesus. Take the warnings about God’s wrath and justice seriously, but also have hope and comfort in his grace and forgiveness. We have a God who is both just and merciful. Anyone who chooses to make Jesus their Lord and savior will see God’s mercy, but everyone else will see God’s justice. It’s a choice!
