A Memory Verse
When looking at the second chapter of Acts, we can find some great advice from Peter, “Repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins.” There are few things that are more urgently needed.
Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you, and to your children, and to all who are far off, even as many as the Lord our God will call to himself.”
Acts 2:38-39 (WEB)
The book of Acts is the news of the Gospels spreading into the world and this verse summarizes the essentials of the Gospel message: repent and be baptized. This is the starting point for making a decision to allow Jesus to be your Lord and Savior. First, a you need to recognize that you are sinful and be sorry. Next, you need to realize that your wrong actions are punishable by death, but that Jesus already paid the penalty. When you are willing to publicly acknowledge that Jesus is your Lord and Savior, baptism is the step that cinches the deal!
The widespread recognition that Jesus is the Messiah started at Pentecost. Peter and the other disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit and were given the ability to preach the Gospel message in the native languages of various visitors to Jerusalem. These people hear the message, accept it, and decide to be baptized. This was not some small baptismal group, it was 3,000 people. Can you imagine if you were preaching the Gospel outside your church and 3,000 people decided to be baptized?
From here, the message of salvation through Jesus could not be stopped. These people went home and told about what they had learned. Peter and the other disciples also went out into the world and started preaching the Gospel. Since the Holy Spirit was with all of them, amazing things started to happen!
