We often look at the trials in our lives as signs that God has forgotten us, or worse, that he is no longer in control. It is difficult to feel blessed when we are in the middle of a storm, and our natural instinct is to shrink back in fear rather than stand firm. This prayer draws from the encouragement in James 5:11, looking at the example of Job to remind us that our suffering is not without a divine boundary. As we seek to follow Jesus through the hard seasons, we can find a deep sense of joy and contentment by trusting that the Lord is working out his good purpose. Even when we feel weak, we can rely on a God who is both compassionate and merciful to see us through to the end.

A Prayer
Dear Father,
You are compassionate and merciful. I adore you because you are the sovereign ruler of all things, and your power has no equal. You are the one who sets the boundaries for the sea and the limits for our struggles. I praise you for your wisdom, which is far above my own, and for your heart, which is always moved by the cries of your children. You are not a distant observer of our pain, but a kind Father who remains present in every moment of our distress.
I confess that I need your compassion and mercy way too often. When troubles come, I wither and shrink back. Even though I know I need to remain steadfast, I struggle to keep my eyes on you. Too often I give in to temptation and turn my back on you, seeking my own comfort or trying to escape the pressure through my own strength. I am sorry for my lack of faith and for the way I doubt your goodness when life becomes difficult. Please forgive my impatience and my tendency to complain when your timing does not match mine.
Thank you for giving the example of Job. Satan threw everything he had at Job, and yet Job remained steadfast. I am grateful for the record of his life because it shows me that your purposes are bigger than my temporary circumstances. Job lost everything that you did not put limits on, but you did put limits. Sometimes we wonder why you don’t protect us from the devil, but Job shows us that you do. Thank you for the promise in James 5:11 (ESV): “Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.” Thank you for the assurance that you are still in control even when chaos seems to reign.
Help me to remember that you do not allow the devil to give me more than I can bear. You place limits on the devil’s power and walk with me in the valleys. Help me to remain steadfast in the face of every trial. Help me to trust you when I cannot see the path ahead. I ask that you would fill me with a quiet joy that isn’t dependent on a trouble-free life, but on the certainty of your presence. Help me to remain faithful in all circumstances, knowing that your mercy is at work in my life. Grant me the strength to follow Jesus with a heart that is anchored in your love.
In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
Reflect
Consider the following reflection questions:
- What is one current trial that makes it difficult for you to feel blessed?
- How does knowing that God sets limits on the devil’s power give you peace today?
- In what ways have you seen the purpose of the Lord in a past difficulty?
- What does it look like for you to remain steadfast this week instead of shrinking back?
- How can you lean on God’s compassion and mercy when you feel your own strength failing?
Respond
Please pray a prayer about remaining steadfast during trials.
If you aren’t sure where to begin, you can use the ACTS prayer method: Adoration, Confession, Thankfulness, and Supplication:
- Adoration: Praise God. Does this verse bring any specific characteristics of God to mind?
- Confession: Tell God that you are sorry for specific sins. Does this verse bring any specific sins to mind?
- Thankfulness: Show gratitude towards God. Does anything from this verse inspire gratitude?
- Supplication: Make requests for yourself and for others. Does anything from this verse inspire a prayer?
If helpful, you can use a prayer journal template.
