Stand Firm — To stay strong and not give up.
Stone — A small, hard rock.
Synagogues — Places where Jewish people gather to worship God and learn.
Temple — A very important building for worshiping God in Bible times.
Terrifying — Very, very scary.
Tried — Taken to a court to see if someone did something wrong.
Wars — Big fights between countries or groups of people.
Wisdom — Knowing what is good and true, and making good choices.
Strange — Something different or not normal.

Summary of the Passage

This passage happens when Jesus is with his disciples, the people who followed him and learned from him. They were visiting the Temple, a very important place where people came to worship God. The disciples talked about how beautiful the building was. But Jesus told them that one day the whole Temple would be destroyed. This surprised them, and they wanted to know when it would happen.

Jesus explained that before the end of time, many difficult things would happen in the world. He said that people would claim to be him, but they should not follow them. There would be wars, earthquakes, and sickness. People would go hungry, and terrible things would happen in the sky. Jesus told his followers not to be afraid when they heard these things.

He also warned that people who followed him would be treated badly. They might be arrested and taken to court. Even family and friends might turn against them. But Jesus promised to give them wisdom and good words to say when this happened. He told them to stand strong and trust him, because even though hard things would happen, God would be with them.

This passage teaches us that life can be hard sometimes, but Jesus stays with his people. He helps them be brave, gives them wise words, and promises to protect them in ways only he can.

Jesus Warns About the Future
5 Some of the followers were talking about the Temple.
They said,
“This is a beautiful Temple, built with the best stones.
Look at the many good gifts that have been offered to God.”
6 But Jesus said,
“The time will come when all that you see here will be destroyed.
Every stone of these buildings will be thrown down to the ground.
Not one stone will be left on another.”
7 Some followers asked Jesus,
“Teacher, when will these things happen?
What will show us that it is time for these things to happen?”
8 Jesus said,
“Be careful!
Don’t be fooled.
Many people will come using my name.
They will say,
‘I am the Messiah’ and
‘The right time has come!’
But don’t follow them.
9 When you hear about wars and riots, don’t be afraid.
These things must happen first.
Then the end will come later.”
10 Then Jesus said to them,
“Nations will fight against other nations.
Kingdoms will fight against other kingdoms.
11 There will be great earthquakes, sicknesses, and other bad things in many places.
In some places there will be no food for the people to eat.
Terrible things will happen, and amazing things will come from heaven to warn people.
12 “But before all these things happen, people will arrest you and do bad things to you.
They will judge you in their synagogues and put you in jail.
You will be forced to stand before kings and governors.
They will do all these things to you because you follow me.
13 But this will give you an opportunity to tell about me.
14 Decide now not to worry about what you will say.
15 I will give you the wisdom to say things that none of your enemies can answer.
16 Even your parents, brothers, relatives, and friends will turn against you.
They will have some of you killed.
17 Everyone will hate you because you follow me.
18 But none of these things can really harm you.
19 You will save yourselves by continuing strong in your faith through all these things.

Jesus Speaks of the Destruction of the Temple
5 Some of the disciples were talking about the Temple, how beautiful it looked with its fine stones and the gifts offered to God. Jesus said,
6 “All this you see—the time will come when not a single stone here will be left in its place; every one will be thrown down.”
Troubles and Persecutions
7 “Teacher,” they asked, “when will this be? And what will happen in order to show that the time has come for it to take place?”
8 Jesus said, “Watch out; don’t be fooled. Many men, claiming to speak for me, will come and say, ‘I am he!’ and, ‘The time has come!’ But don’t follow them.
9 Don’t be afraid when you hear of wars and revolutions; such things must happen first, but they do not mean that the end is near.”
10 He went on to say, “Countries will fight each other; kingdoms will attack one another.
11 There will be terrible earthquakes, famines, and plagues everywhere; there will be strange and terrifying things coming from the sky.
12 Before all these things take place, however, you will be arrested and persecuted; you will be handed over to be tried in synagogues and be put in prison; you will be brought before kings and rulers for my sake.
13 This will be your chance to tell the Good News.
14-15 Make up your minds ahead of time not to worry about how you will defend yourselves, because I will give you such words and wisdom that none of your enemies will be able to refute or contradict what you say.
16 You will be handed over by your parents, your brothers, your relatives, and your friends; and some of you will be put to death.
17 Everyone will hate you because of me.
18 But not a single hair from your heads will be lost.
19 Stand firm, and you will save yourselves.
