ELL Lesson 27: Luke 6:27-36 — Love Your Enemies

This Bible study lesson is for people who are learning English (ELL or ESL students). It is made for advanced beginner and intermediate English learners. Children who speak English or adults who prefer easy English may also enjoy it and learn from it, although I also have a Sunday School lesson on Luke 6:27-36 that may work better for native English speakers.

Summary of the Passage

This passage teaches how Jesus wants his followers to love other people, even when it is hard. At that time, many people thought it was okay to be kind only to their friends and family. But Jesus taught something different. He said to love even those who hurt us or say bad things about us.

Jesus explained that we should pray for people who are unkind to us. If someone hits us or takes our things, we should be ready to show them love, not fight back. He told us to treat others the way we want them to treat us. Jesus wants us to be kind and giving, even when people do not deserve it.

Then Jesus asked his followers to think about how easy it is to love people who already love them. Even people who do not follow God can do that. What makes God’s people different is that they love their enemies, give without asking for anything back, and show kindness like God does. Jesus reminded them that God is kind to both good and bad people. He told them to be merciful, just like God is merciful to us.

This passage teaches us that real love is shown not only to friends but also to enemies. God’s people are called to love in a way that shows God’s kindness and mercy to everyone.

Read The Passage

Most English learners should use the Easy-to-Read Version (ERV), the New International Reader’s Version (NIRV), or the Good News Translation (GNT). If you want to try something harder, you can read one of the other Bible versions.

Text from the ERV Bible Translation

Love Your Enemies
27 “But I say to you people who are listening to me, love your enemies.
Do good to those who hate you.
28 Ask God to bless the people who ask for bad things to happen to you.
Pray for the people who are mean to you.
29 If someone hits you on the side of your face, let them hit the other side too.
If someone takes your coat, don’t stop them from taking your shirt too.
30 Give to everyone who asks you for something.
When someone takes something that is yours, don’t ask for it back.
31 Do for others what you want them to do for you.
32 “If you love only those who love you, should you get any special praise for doing that?
No, even sinners love those who love them!
33 If you do good only to those who do good to you, should you get any special praise for doing that?
No, even sinners do that!
34 If you lend things to people, always expecting to get something back, should you get any special praise for that?
No, even sinners lend to other sinners so that they can get back the same amount!
35 “I’m telling you to love your enemies and do good to them.
Lend to people without expecting to get anything back.
If you do this, you will have a great reward.
You will be children of the Most High God.
Yes, because God is good even to the people who are full of sin and not thankful.
36 Give love and mercy the same as your Father gives love and mercy.

Luke 6:27-36 (ERV)
Text from the GNT Bible Translation

Love for Enemies
27 “But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
28 bless those who curse you, and pray for those who mistreat you.
29 If anyone hits you on one cheek, let him hit the other one too; if someone takes your coat, let him have your shirt as well.
30 Give to everyone who asks you for something, and when someone takes what is yours, do not ask for it back.
31 Do for others just what you want them to do for you.
32 “If you love only the people who love you, why should you receive a blessing? Even sinners love those who love them!
33 And if you do good only to those who do good to you, why should you receive a blessing? Even sinners do that!
34 And if you lend only to those from whom you hope to get it back, why should you receive a blessing? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount!
35 No! Love your enemies and do good to them; lend and expect nothing back. You will then have a great reward, and you will be children of the Most High God. For he is good to the ungrateful and the wicked.
36 Be merciful just as your Father is merciful.

Luke 6:27-36 (GNT)
