Summary of the Passage

This passage tells about a day when Jesus was teaching many people in a house. Some important men called Pharisees and teachers of the Law were there. They wanted to listen to Jesus and see what he would do. Many sick people came too because God gave Jesus the power to heal them.

There were also some friends who cared very much about a man who could not walk. They carried him on a bed to see Jesus, but the house was so full of people they could not get in. These friends did not give up. They carried the man up to the roof, made a hole in the tiles, and gently lowered him down in front of Jesus.

When Jesus saw their strong faith, he told the man that his sins were forgiven. The Pharisees and teachers did not like this. They thought only God could forgive sins. Jesus knew what they were thinking. He asked them if it was easier to forgive sins or to heal a man’s body. Then, to show them his power, Jesus told the man to get up, pick up his bed, and go home. The man stood up right away and went home praising God.

This passage teaches us that Jesus has the power to heal sick people and forgive sins. It also shows us the love and faith of good friends who help others find Jesus.

Most English learners should use the Easy-to-Read Version (ERV), the New International Reader’s Version (NIRV), or the Good News Translation (GNT). If you want to try something harder, you can read one of the other Bible versions.

Text from the ERV Bible Translation

Jesus Heals a Crippled Man
17 One day Jesus was teaching the people.
The Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there too.
They had come from every town in Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem.
The Lord was giving Jesus the power to heal people.
18 There was a man who was paralyzed, and some other men were carrying him on a mat.
They tried to bring him and put him down before Jesus.
19 But there were so many people that they could not find a way to Jesus.
So they went up on the roof and lowered the crippled man down through a hole in the ceiling.
They lowered the mat into the room so that the crippled man was lying before Jesus.
20 Jesus saw how much faith they had and said to the sick man,
“Friend, your sins are forgiven.”
21 The Jewish teachers of the law and the Pharisees thought to themselves,
“Who is this man who dares to say such things?
What an insult to God!
No one but God can forgive sins.”
22 But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said,
“Why do you have these questions in your minds?
23-24 The Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins.
But how can I prove this to you?
Maybe you are thinking it was easy for me to say,
‘Your sins are forgiven.’
There’s no proof that it really happened.
But what if I say to the man,
‘Stand up and walk’?
Then you will be able to see that I really have this power.”
So Jesus said to the paralyzed man,
“I tell you, stand up!
Take your mat and go home!”
25 The man immediately stood up in front of everyone.
He picked up his mat and walked home, praising God.
26 Everyone was completely amazed and began to praise God.
They were filled with great respect for God’s power.
They said, “Today we saw amazing things!”

Luke 5:17-26 (ERV)
Text from the GNT Bible Translation

Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man
17 One day when Jesus was teaching, some Pharisees and teachers of the Law were sitting there who had come from every town in Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem. The power of the Lord was present for Jesus to heal the sick.
18 Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a bed, and they tried to carry him into the house and put him in front of Jesus.
19 Because of the crowd, however, they could find no way to take him in. So they carried him up on the roof, made an opening in the tiles, and let him down on his bed into the middle of the group in front of Jesus.
20 When Jesus saw how much faith they had, he said to the man, “Your sins are forgiven, my friend.”
21 The teachers of the Law and the Pharisees began to say to themselves, “Who is this man who speaks such blasphemy! God is the only one who can forgive sins!”
22 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Why do you think such things?
23 Is it easier to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’?
24 I will prove to you, then, that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, pick up your bed, and go home!”
25 At once the man got up in front of them all, took the bed he had been lying on, and went home, praising God.
26 They were all completely amazed! Full of fear, they praised God, saying, “What marvelous things we have seen today!”
