Summary of the Passage
This passage tells us what happened when Jesus visited a town called Capernaum. Capernaum was a place in the land of Galilee where people gathered at a synagogue to worship God, especially on the Sabbath, a holy day of rest. Jesus went there and taught the people. They were amazed because he spoke with great power and authority. His words were clear, strong, and wise.
While Jesus was teaching, a man with an evil spirit began to scream. The evil spirit inside the man knew who Jesus was. It called Jesus God’s holy messenger and asked if he came to destroy them. The evil spirit was afraid of Jesus because it knew Jesus was stronger.
Then Jesus spoke to the evil spirit. He told it to be quiet and come out of the man. Right away, the spirit threw the man to the ground but did not hurt him. The evil spirit left the man, and the people were surprised. They had never seen anyone with so much power. Jesus’ words could command evil spirits, and they had to obey.
This passage shows us that Jesus has great power over evil. It teaches us that when Jesus speaks, even the spirits listen. Jesus cares about people and wants to free them from harm and fear.

Text from the ERV Bible Translation
Jesus Frees a Man From an Evil Spirit
Luke 4:31-37 (ERV)
31 Jesus went to Capernaum, a city in Galilee.
On the Sabbath day he taught the people.
32 They were amazed at his teaching because he spoke with authority.
33 In the synagogue there was a man who had an evil spirit from the devil inside him.
The man shouted loudly,
34 “Jesus of Nazareth!
What do you want with us?
Did you come here to destroy us?
I know who you are—God’s Holy One!”
35 But Jesus warned the evil spirit to stop.
He said, “Be quiet! Come out of the man!”
The evil spirit threw the man down on the ground in front of everyone.
Then the evil spirit left the man and did not hurt him.
36 The people were amazed.
They said to each other,
“What does this mean?
With authority and power he commands evil spirits and they come out.”
37 And so the news about Jesus spread to every place in the whole area.

A Man with an Evil Spirit
Luke 4:31-37 (GNT)
31 Then Jesus went to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, where he taught the people on the Sabbath.
32 They were all amazed at the way he taught, because he spoke with authority.
33 In the synagogue was a man who had the spirit of an evil demon in him; he screamed out in a loud voice,
34 “Ah! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Are you here to destroy us? I know who you are: you are God’s holy messenger!”
35 Jesus ordered the spirit, “Be quiet and come out of the man!” The demon threw the man down in front of them and went out of him without doing him any harm.
36 The people were all amazed and said to one another, “What kind of words are these? With authority and power this man gives orders to the evil spirits, and they come out!”
37 And the report about Jesus spread everywhere in that region.
