Summary of the Passage
This passage tells what happened the night Jesus was born. There were shepherds in a field, taking care of their sheep. Suddenly, an angel from God appeared. The angel shone with a bright light and the shepherds were very afraid. But the angel told them not to be afraid. The angel brought good news that would make everyone happy. The angel said a Savior, who is Christ the Lord, was born in Bethlehem.
The angel told the shepherds where to find the baby. The baby would be wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. Then, many angels appeared and praised God. They sang about God’s glory and about peace on earth.
After the angels left, the shepherds hurried to Bethlehem. They found Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus, just as the angel had said. The shepherds told Mary and Joseph what the angel told them. Everyone who heard their story was amazed. Mary quietly remembered these things in her heart. The shepherds went back to their fields, thanking God for everything they had seen and heard.
This passage shows us that God gave this good news to simple people first. God cares about everyone. It teaches us to listen to God’s message, to believe it, and to tell others.

Text from the ERV Bible Translation
Some Shepherds Hear About Jesus
Luke 2:8-20 (ERV)
8 That night, some shepherds were out in the fields near Bethlehem watching their sheep.
9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord was shining around them.
The shepherds were very afraid.
10 The angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid.
I have some very good news for you—news that will make everyone happy.
11 Today your Savior was born in David’s town.
He is the Messiah, the Lord.
12 This is how you will know him: You will find a baby wrapped in pieces of cloth and lying in a feeding box.”
13 Then a huge army of angels from heaven joined the first angel, and they were all praising God, saying,
14 “Praise God in heaven, and on earth let there be peace to the people who please him.”
15 The angels left the shepherds and went back to heaven.
The shepherds said to each other, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this great event the Lord has told us about.”
16 So they went running and found Mary and Joseph.
And there was the baby, lying in the feeding box.
17 When they saw the baby, they told what the angels said about this child.
18 Everyone was surprised when they heard what the shepherds told them.
19 Mary continued to think about these things, trying to understand them.
20 The shepherds went back to their sheep, praising God and thanking him for everything they had seen and heard.
It was just as the angel had told them.

The Shepherds and the Angels
Luke 2:8-20 (GNT)
8 There were some shepherds in that part of the country who were spending the night in the fields, taking care of their flocks.
9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone over them. They were terribly afraid,
10 but the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid! I am here with good news for you, which will bring great joy to all the people.
11 This very day in David’s town your Savior was born—Christ the Lord!
12 And this is what will prove it to you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
13 Suddenly a great army of heaven’s angels appeared with the angel, singing praises to God:
14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and peace on earth to those with whom he is pleased!”
15 When the angels went away from them back into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us.”
16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and saw the baby lying in the manger.
17 When the shepherds saw him, they told them what the angel had said about the child.
18 All who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said.
19 Mary remembered all these things and thought deeply about them.
20 The shepherds went back, singing praises to God for all they had heard and seen; it had been just as the angel had told them.
