A Prayer for Protection

A Prayer for Protection

Life is filled with battles we never expected to fight. Some come suddenly, while others linger far longer than we would choose. In those moments, fear and anxiety can feel like constant companions, and we may be tempted to believe we are left to face them alone. Yet, scripture gently reminds us that our heavenly Father is both our refuge and our defender. He sees what lies ahead, stands with us in every trial, and promises to guard us from the schemes of the evil one. This prayer is an honest offering for those weary in the fight — a reminder that though our circumstances may be uncertain, our God is not. He is faithful, he is strong, and he invites us to lay our burdens at his feet.

A Prayer

2 Thessalonians 3:3 (ESV): But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.

Dear Heavenly Father,

When the enemy comes, I am fearful. I feel the weight of anxiety and the ache of uncertainty pressing in. But with you, I can have confidence. You are my refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. You are not shaken by what shakes me. You are not caught off guard. In 2 Thessalonians 3:3, you promise to establish me and guard me against the evil one. That promise is both humbling and hopeful. You, the sovereign creator of the universe, have not left me defenseless.

I confess that far too often I forget this. I loosen my hold on trust and let fear take over. I try to fight my battles on my own, as if I am the one who must control every outcome. I forget that you have already won the victory. I try to protect myself with my own plans, rather than leaning on your promises. Forgive me, Lord, for all the times I run ahead instead of waiting for your direction. Forgive me for doubting your goodness when the battle drags on longer than I expected.

Still, I am grateful. I thank you for all the ways you have already rescued me. You have kept me from decisions that would have led to ruin. You have preserved my relationships, my mind, my faith, even when I teetered on the edge of despair. You have brought encouragement through others when I needed it most. You have given me peace that made no sense given the circumstances. And even when you have allowed hardship to linger, you have used it to refine me, to strip away pride, and to teach me endurance, compassion, and trust.

Sometimes your version of guarding is not mine. I want escape. You offer strength. I want ease. You offer maturity. But I see now that your goal is not just my comfort—it is the health of my soul. And for that, I thank you.

Even so, Father, you invite me to bring my requests. So I ask: if it is possible, rescue me from the difficulties I face now. Spare me from trauma, pain, and fear. But if these trials are part of your plan to shape me into who you created me to be, then I ask for courage. I ask for your presence to be thick around me. I ask for your Spirit to strengthen me, your word to guide me, and your peace to sustain me.

You are my protector. You are my defender. You are good, and I trust you.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
