A Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,
As I reflect on 1 Peter 5:1–11, I want to truly examine my own heart and consider whether I am walking in humility in all areas of life. This passage reminds me that humility is not reserved for a specific season, age, or role—it is a calling for everyone. You call elders and leaders to shepherd with gentleness and without selfish gain, and you instruct younger people to submit with grace and respect. Then you speak to all of us: “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:6-7 (ESV)
Lord, I confess that pride creeps into my heart more often than I would like to admit. Sometimes I want to be seen as competent and in control, and I resist the very humility that your word lifts up. I want recognition. I want my voice to be heard. But in seeking those things, I can become less teachable, less gentle, and less dependent on you. Forgive me, Lord, for the ways I have clung to my own importance rather than bowing before your greatness.
Thank you for being a God who not only commands humility but models it. In Jesus, you showed us what it means to lead by serving and to love without seeking status. Thank you for caring for me so deeply that you invite me to cast my anxieties on you. I am grateful that I don’t have to bear the weight of my life alone. Your care frees me to walk in humility, knowing I am held by your hand.
Father, please teach me how to be a humble teacher—willing to listen, slow to speak, eager to learn even as I lead. And help me be a humble student—ready to receive instruction, open to correction, and always aware that I still have much to learn. Whether I am in a position of influence or following someone else’s lead, let my heart posture be one of surrender to your authority and your timing. Clothe me in humility so that I can resist the enemy’s traps of pride and self-reliance.
Help me trust that your timing is perfect, and that when I walk humbly before you, you will lift me up in due time. I long to be someone who reflects your character—gentle, faithful, and wise.
In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
