Why does the allure of sin often seem so irresistible? As followers of Christ, our aspiration is to emulate the purity of Christ, yet there are days when we find ourselves repeatedly seeking forgiveness. This is not unusual! In Romans 7, Paul ponders this exact issue!
For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.
Romans 7:15 (ESV)
In these verses, we gain assurance that even the most prominent Christians have struggled with the exact same problems that we face every day. Again, in 1 Corinthians 10, Paul ponders this further:
No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
1 Corinthians 10:13 (ESV)
The additional comfort that we receive from this is that God will provide a way out of our temptation. This brings us to a practical example of how this might play out in Acts 8.
Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money, saying, “Give me this power also, so that anyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! You have neither part nor lot in this matter, for your heart is not right before God. Repent, therefore, of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, if possible, the intent of your heart may be forgiven you. For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of iniquity.” And Simon answered, “Pray for me to the Lord, that nothing of what you have said may come upon me.”
Acts 8:18-24 (ESV)
Simon the Magician, a different person than Simon Peter, had recently become a Christian. Previously, he had earned money though impressive feats of magic, but when Philip came to town, Simon was awed by the signs of the Holy Spirit and decided to convert to Christianity.
Unfortunately, the temptation of this power proved to be Simon’s weakness and he swiftly veered back towards his former inclinations. Witnessing the miraculous outpouring of the Holy Spirit through the apostles, Simon sought to purchase this divine power with money. Peter’s stern rebuke exposed the corruption of Simon’s heart, prompting him to repent and plead for forgiveness.
This story serves as a poignant reminder that all of us can falter and succumb to the seductive grip of sin. Yet, through sincere repentance and prayer, there remains hope for redemption and restoration. Let’s follow Philip’s advice, just as Simon did!
Memorize this verse and remember to go to the Lord in prayer whenever we do the sinful things that we hate:
And Simon answered, “Pray for me to the Lord, that nothing of what you have said may come upon me.”
Acts 8:24 (ESV)
Reflection Questions
Consider the following reflection questions:
- How do Paul’s reflections in Romans 8 resonate with your own struggles with sin and temptation? In what ways do you relate to his internal conflict between wanting to do what is right and yet finding yourself doing what you hate?
- Consider Paul’s assurance in 1 Corinthians 10:13 that God provides a way out of temptation. Reflect on a time when you experienced God’s provision of an escape route from a tempting situation. How did this experience deepen your trust in God’s faithfulness?
- Reflect on Simon the Magician’s story in Acts 8. What aspects of his character and journey do you find relatable? How does his experience serve as a cautionary tale about the dangers of allowing worldly desires to overshadow our commitment to following Christ?
- In Acts 8:18-24, Peter’s response to Simon’s sin is both firm and compassionate. How can we emulate Peter’s approach in confronting sin within our own lives and in supporting others who may be struggling with temptation?
- Consider Simon’s response to Peter’s rebuke, where he humbly asks for prayer. Reflect on the importance of humility and vulnerability in the process of repentance and seeking forgiveness. How can we cultivate a spirit of humility in our own hearts and communities, acknowledging our need for God’s grace and guidance?
