Exploring the Roots of Compassion: A Book Review of “In My Father’s House” by Corrie ten Boom

Exploring the Roots of Compassion: A Look at Corrie ten Boom's Book, "In My Father's House"

Continuing my interest in Corrie ten Boom’s books, I decided to further explore the influences of her childhood on her adult actions by reading her book, “In my Father’s House.” The narrative powerfully illustrates how our early years can shape our character. In Corrie’s case, her grandfather’s deep love for the Jewish people had a lasting impact. A century later, Corrie, along with her father and some siblings, found themselves arrested for concealing Jews from the Nazis.

As I continued to read her book, it became apparent that Corrie’s compassionate disposition was evident from an early age. As evidenced over and over again, she harbored a deep concern for those society overlooked, belittled, and oppressed, and did all in her power to grant both justice and kindness that was rooted in the love of Jesus. Her care and support of marginalized individuals was a constant thread, a path encouraged by her father’s unwavering support.

Her father’s actions throughout this book set a remarkable example of generosity. Whenever someone was in need, her father was not hesitant to take anyone into their home. It’s no wonder that when World War II unfolded, their instinctive response was to extend help wherever possible.

Their lives were deeply rooted in a strong belief in Jesus and a steadfast commitment to living out his purposes. Prayer, Bible study, and teaching others about Jesus were as integral to their daily routine as breathing. The need to know and follow Jesus trumped everything else in life.
