Sharing the Forgiveness and Joy of Jesus – A Book Review of “Tramp for the Lord” by Corrie ten Boom

Sharing the Forgiveness and Joy of Jesus: A Look at Corrie ten Boom's Book, Tramp for the Lord

The Book

Tramp for the Lord is a powerful book written by Corrie ten Boom, a courageous Dutch woman who survived the Holocaust. Following her liberation from the brutal Ravensbrück concentration camp, Corrie went on to heal, forgive, and share her story with the world. Within the pages of this amazing memoir, we will see Corrie choosing to trust God as she embraces a vagabond lifestyle that allows complete guidance and direction from her heavenly Father. Much like the disciples in the Book of Acts, she obediently follows God’s leading, never certain where she might find rest for her weary head.

This book continues the narrative right where The Hiding Place left off. Corrie’s resolute decision to share her profound tale with the world underscores the profound belief that forgiveness of others is possible, regardless of the enormity of sins and transgressions committed against you or the depth of suffering endured. Indeed, Corrie draws a parallel to the extreme suffering endured by Jesus, which ultimately paved the path to our redemption. To Corrie’s surprise, after one of these heartfelt talks, she was forced to come face-to-face with one of her most merciless captors-turned-Christian and was asked to offer him forgiveness as a sister in Christ. Can you fathom such an experience? Her unwavering commitment to faith and forgiveness was put to the test and she came out triumphantly victorious!

This is not to say that Corrie was not immune to moments of despair and setbacks. In fact, Corrie discovered that the more she committed to the mission that Jesus had given her, the more she was attacked by evil spirits. While some of these attacks were more overt than others, she realized her need to don the whole armor of God to be able to withstand these forces!

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.

Ephesians 6:10-11 (ESV)

Corrie’s battle against a particular spirit deeply resonates with me—fatigue. In the early days of launching this blog, I was brimming with excitement, dedicating hours on end to writing. This was easily manageable while my kids were at school and I had plenty of uninterrupted time. However, when summer arrived, family vacations ensued, and I leaned on previously crafted posts to sustain the blog until September. As the new school year dawned, I found myself wavering and procrastinating, gripped by a sense of weariness and disillusionment. Thankfully, while I was lying in bed with a cold, God directed me to this book. Reenergized, I am now striving to put on the full armor of God so that I can serve him in whatever manner he directs!

Another profound insight that struck me was Corrie’s father’s statement that “Happiness is not dependent on happenings, but on relationships within the happenings.” Remarkably, even amid the horrors of a concentration camp, Corrie was able to find moments of both happiness and joy as she interacted with her sister, other prisoners, and even some of the guards! Such instances serve as a powerful assurance that God walks beside us and provides, even in the bleakest of hours.

If you are in the midst of a dark time and are seeking to find happiness and joy, consider reading Tramp for the Lord!
